Botanical insecticide*
■ Insecticide based on natural plant extracts (matrine).
Matrine is a natural alkaloid extracted from plants of the Sophora genus, widely studied as a botanical insecticide for the control of numerous agricultural pests.
It is valued for its low toxicity to non-target organisms, rapid environmental degradation, and its potential for use in integrated pest management strategies.
Mechanisms of Action
Matrine acts primarily through contact and ingestion, interfering with the nervous system of insects by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and activating detoxification enzymes such as CarE and GST. The effect can be enhanced by synergies with other compounds that facilitate penetration or act on similar targets.
Safety and Environmental Impact
Matrine is considered safe for beneficial organisms such as natural predators (e.g., ladybugs) and degrades rapidly in the environment, reducing the risk of accumulation. Modern formulations (e.g., oil suspensions) improve efficacy and ease of use.
